It’s getting harder to keep up with modern-day vernacular, but that’s the beauty of a living language. Some popular slangs this year:
-Rizz: someone who has great charisma.
-Boujee: Rich, luxurious, fancy.
-Vibe Check: to make sure someone is having a good time.
-Stop the Cap: Stop lying.
-Woke: Socially conscious, culturally aware.
-Totes: Short for “totally” often use to agree with someone.
-Bussin’: Someone or something exceptionally cool or exiting.
-Gyatt or gyat is use to express strong excitement, surprise, or admiration. Gyatt is most commonly used as an exclamation in reaction to seeing a large butt.
I’m probably missing a bunch, but hey this time next year, they’ll be a cornucopia of new slang words for us old folks to navigate. I don’t know about you but I’m all for it.
Bob Dylan’s “Positively 4th street” is making a lot more sense the older I become.
I was hoping to publish some more work this year, but medical problems have become a pain-in-the-ass, whereas before they were a mere excuse to get a day-off work, or a much-needed vacation (This is America, no such thing as obligatory vacation like they do in Europe, so this notion might be lost on our European friends. We are basically slaves to the grind in the US. Send help!). Hoping next year will be fruitful.
Things that didn’t make sense before:
Sensible shoes.
Frank Zappa interviews.
Henry Rollins spoken word performances (always been a favorite).
Reading glasses.
High fiber foods.
Eight-hours of sleep. (haven’t done this in ages).
Grandparent’s and their righteous anger and indignation.
At the risk of sounding very much like a Debbie Downer and being a writer, it’s difficult to admit but I’m afraid that in five to ten years from now, all forms of entertainment will be created with AI. Yes, including books. It’s depressing to think, and I hope I am wrong about this. But hey as long as this AI doesn’t go after John and Sara Connor, we’ll be all right … Right? (nervous chuckle) Right?
Someone wiser than me once said: “In childhood we idolize the hero. In adulthood we understand the villain.” That hits hard, doesn’t it?
Thank you for reading.
Have a happy Festivus! And Fruitful New Year!
