Memorial Day is upon us. Marking it the official start of summer, and a time when we honor the men and women who sacrificed themselves so that we can enjoy this (last vestige?) of democracy. We thank you for your service, I only wish this country would take better care of every veteran, from every war (but that’s a post for another time).
Got some more rejections for my short stories… again, (the fun part and parcel of being a writer) It would be great if they would at least tell you what the hell it’s wrong with the story. Some others don’t even tell you that your stuff was rejected. They just ignore you, oh well, fuck it, I’ll keep spinning yarns no matter what. I’m one of the few writers in this space who doesn’t need validation from anyone, especially some gate-keeper. I would keep writing even if it’s for an audience of one.
Thank God for self-publishing.
Speaking of which; I’m about finished with a poetry collection I’ve been working on, I might add a few more poems to the Stack in the near future. I never done poetry before; I mean; I’ve written songs which are kind-of the same? Fuck if I know, these things just happen to creative types. I’ve also been wrestling with a collection of short stories for a hitmen anthology I’ve got on deck, and I still haven’t tackled a rock and roll crime fiction novel I’ve been working (on and off) for the better part of three years (lost a few pivotal chapters a few years back and it bummed me out, so I shelve it for a bit).
I’ve been re-reading: Ham on Rye by Charles Bukowski, because it’s one of my favorite books. I’ve been reading on and off, the Tarantino novel based on the movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood—which is fantastic! But you can tell the thing was written by a screenwriter. Which is not exactly a bad thing. I’m dying to read Lucinda William’s memoir Don’t tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You. I’ll say it again; she is a national treasure. I also would like to get my grubby paws on a copy of S. A. Cosby’s latest All the Sinners Bleed I read his first book: My Darkest Prayer and it’s a banger. I would also like to read Yellowface by R. F. Kuang.
Oh, before I forget, if you haven’t watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, do so as soon as possible, it’s a fantastically written show, it’s so well-written, not a single line goes to waste. Top-notch acting. The cinematography and wardrobe are some of the bests I’ve seen.
Catch the Sun by the Doves, is by far one of my favorites “summer songs” So, before I leave to do some more writing; here it is. Enjoy!
